Step-by-Step Guide to Start a Carpet Export Business
Introduction: Turning Threads into Dreams
Starting a carpet business is not just about weaving wool and silk — it’s about weaving heritage, art, and vision together. In India, handmade carpets hold centuries of craftsmanship, and I, Sarthak Pandey, am proud to be part of that story as the third generation in my family’s carpet manufacturing legacy.
My journey with RUGS EMPIRE began with a dream — to take our family’s traditional craftsmanship to homes around the world and give it a royal touch. Today, our brand stands for elegance, sustainability, and storytelling — where every rug truly “Tells a Royal Story.”
๐งถ A Legacy of Craftsmanship: Three Generations of Passion
Carpet weaving runs deep in my family’s roots. For decades, my grandfather and father dedicated their lives to hand-knotted, hand-tufted, and flat-woven carpets, serving clients in India and across the globe.
I grew up surrounded by looms, colors, and artisans — watching patterns take life knot by knot. Their passion inspired me to continue this beautiful art form while blending it with modern marketing, digital platforms, and global design trends.
๐ Birth of RUGS EMPIRE: From Loom to Living Room
When I founded RUGS EMPIRE, my mission was simple — to bring India’s handmade artistry to global audiences through digital innovation. From design to delivery, every rug we produce is crafted with love, ethics, and attention to detail.
We specialize in all kinds of handmade rugs — hand-tufted, hand-knotted, scalloped, Oushak, modern, boho, and vintage designs — blending tradition with trends to match modern interiors.
Our brand slogan, “Where Every Rug Tells a Royal Story,” perfectly captures our commitment to storytelling through craftsmanship.
๐งญ How to Start Your Own Carpet Business – Step by Step
If you’re inspired to begin your journey in the carpet industry, here’s what I’ve learned from experience:
1. Understand the Art and the Market
Before you begin, learn about different types of carpets — wool, silk, cotton, hand-knotted, hand-tufted, and dhurries. Understand which markets (local or international) have growing demand.
> Tip: U.S., Europe, and Middle East are top buyers of Indian handmade carpets.
2. Build Your Supplier and Artisan Network
Carpet making is teamwork. Build connections with local artisans and weavers. If you belong to a carpet-making region like Bhadohi or Mirzapur, that’s your biggest advantage.
3. Register Your Business and Get Export Documents
To start exporting, you’ll need:
IEC (Import Export Code) : DGFT
GST Registration
RCMC Certificate (from Export Promotion Council)
LUT & AD Code Registration for customs and shipping compliance
CURRENT ACCOUNT: ON FIRM NAME
COMPANY STAMP
4. Start Online – Build a Digital Store
In today’s world, online presence is everything. Create an Etsy shop, Pinterest boards, Instagram page, and Blogger website to share your journey.
That’s how I took RUGS EMPIRE global — through storytelling, photos, and transparency.

๐ฌ Lessons from My Journey
Never compromise on quality — each rug represents your reputation.
Always respect artisans — they are the heart of your business.
Stay consistent online — post regularly, engage with your customers, and share behind-the-scenes stories.
Build trust through honesty and transparency — every rug should deliver what it promises.
✨ The RUGS EMPIRE Vision
From a small family workshop to a growing global brand, RUGS EMPIRE represents India’s art, tradition, and entrepreneurial spirit. My goal is to continue expanding our reach — bringing handcrafted rugs into modern homes worldwide while supporting local artisans and sustainable practices.
